Meet our Therapist - Emilie

Emilie is a Brisbane-based Occupational Therapist (specialising in sexual health and intimacy) and Psychosexual Therapist who has extensive experience working with those affected by psychiatric and psychosocial disorders.

Over the course of her career, she has always had a keen interest in sexual health and mental health, which led her to completing her Master of Science in Medicine (Sexual and Reproductive Health) specialising in psychosexual therapy, through the University of Sydney.

Being born overseas and immigrating to Australia from a young age, Emilie is understanding of the potential cultural barriers in addressing both mental health and sexual health need.

Emilie is passionate about providing accessible healthcare and minimising the current taboos around mental health and sexual health. She established Passion & Minds Health in hopes of supporting everyone, particularly those affected by mental health and psychosocial conditions, to engage in an enjoyable and happy life through meaningful connections, and intimacy with themselves and others.

Occupational Therapy & Psychosexual Therapy

What is Occupational Therapy?

Simply put, Occupational Therapy is about helping people do the things that they want and need to do in their lives.

From waking up in the morning, to making the first meal of the day, to taking a nice hot (or cold) shower – our ability to do these things can be impacted by so many different things.

OTs help those who might be struggling with their mental health or impacted by their physical health to engage in their daily tasks and more.

What is Psychosexual Therapy?

Psychosexual Therapy (also known as sex therapy) is a specialised form of therapy that focuses on providing a safe space for people to address different sex-related and sexuality topics. This might include sex education, support with sexual or intimacy concern/s, or discussions around sexuality.

Some common issues that psychosexual therapy addresses include performance anxiety, difficulties with orgasm and ejaculation, and difficulties with intimacy and communication.

It is extremely important to note that there is no physical touch involved in sex therapy/psychosexual therapy.

Why is sexual health and sexuality important?

Sexual health is much more than just about having sex, STIs and contraception.

Sexuality and intimacy are extremely important parts of our health and wellbeing, and it may surprise you how much it actually impacts our daily lives.

As humans, we are drawn towards intimacy and connection. From our daily connections, friendships, romantic relationships, and even just our relationship with ourselves, our understanding and values around sexual health shapes how we form meaningful connections.

So, when our own sexuality and intimacy needs are neglected, this can cause people to become unhappy and unsettled with their lives. There is also a very high likelihood that this will cause a domino effect on other aspects of our lives as well.

How is sexual health, Psychosexual Therapy, and Occupational Therapy related?

When someone is impacted by a mental health psychosocial, or physical health condition, it may not be easy for them to be able to seek out the connection and intimacy that us as human beings want.

As an OT specialising in psychosexual therapy, we can help people build skills that they need to be able to form healthy and meaningful relationships, which might include finding an intimate partner, and safe sexual engagement.

This might look like:

  • Building social and communication skills
  • Helping them understanding social boundaries and their own boundaries
  • Education around safe sex and sexual health
  • Addressing executive functioning difficulties to navigate the hectic world of socialising and dating
  • Assessing the need for assistive equipment to support re-engagement in sexual and intimate activities
  • Educating our clients’ supports services on how to best support them in the ares of socialising and intimacy

Occupational Therapy

We are able to provide Occupational Therapy (OT) Functional Capacity Assessments (Psychiatric and Psychosocial Disabilities) for NDIS Purposes.

A Functional Capacity Assessment can be requested for various purposes. Most commonly, FCAs can assist with:

  • NDIS Change of Circumstances Application
    • To apply for an earlier review for a participant’s NDIS plan

  • Guidance around types of supports a participant requires and would benefit from

  • Understanding of a participant’s support needs

  • How to best utilise a participant’s funding to ensure that that needs are being met appropriately

OT assessment appointments are generally 60mins in duration, and usually require two separate appointments to complete. Depending on the participants’ needs and limitations, this can be flexible.

OT Reports average around 8-10 hours to finalise.

If you have any enquiries or if you are unsure whether these services are right for you, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

We are happy to assist where possible.
